Have you been walking along 17th Avenue this week and heard people yelling NOFX and Ramones songs? That would be the Punk Rock Singalong, which happens every Monday at The Ship & Anchor every summer. Rob Gruszecki and Eric Svilpis (who you might recognize from local folk-punk band Ghost Factory) lead the entire patio in rowdy renditions of punk classics from 6 to 9 p.m.. Admission is free; get there early to secure a seat.

If you haven’t had your fill of The Ship after that, swing by the next day and watch Leicester City take on the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club at 1 p.m. or catch Punk Rock Bingo later in the evening. The Ship regularly screens football matches; check out their site to know when!

Swing over to Canyon Meadows Theatre in the evening for a cheap date; on the 20th, they’re showing Toonie Movies all day.

Ratboy Comedy takes over Vern’s Tavern every Wednesday night. This “subterranean’’ open mic attracts comedians ranging from absolute beginners to seasoned pros, with up to 16 comedians getting five minutes of chaos on the stage. Five bucks get you in the door, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you could even perform yourself!

Keep the comedy vibes going on Friday with Ukrainian Stand-up Comedy at the Silverfox Saloon. The show at 6 p.m. is in Ukrainian, and the second at 8 is in English, so plan accordingly! Comedian Alex Kotsyk has performed worldwide—from Kyiv to Rio de Janeiro and now, right here in Cowtown.

Barley & Smoke: Grillin’ for a Cure is a fundraising event for Kids Cancer Care at Enmax Park this Saturday. It brings together top breweries and local restaurants for barbecue, good times, and a good cause. Tickets are going fast, so check their website now!

You can also head to Ghana House in the Northeast for the Cultural Connection and Celebration Event, starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday. This shindig is about increasing cross-cultural connections in Alberta and enjoying some fantastic international food. Entry is free, but you must register beforehand on the Eventbrite page.

The Disney Character/Superhero Day Market at the Bearspaw Lifestyle Centre is for the young and the young-at-heart on Saturday morning. There’s a market, Disney characters arriving for photo ops by helicopter, and even an epic dance-off. The party starts at 10 a.m., and all are welcome.

Ammolite Opera commemorates its inaugural season with Proving Up, an opera about the American Dream told through the story of Nebraskan homesteaders in the 1870s. It opens this Saturday and runs on select dates into next week. Seeing a new arts company in town is always exciting, especially when they program in the summer.

Pick up the August copy of The Scene for more events and things to do around the city.
