February is Black History Month, and there are lots of ways to engage with the vibrant Black culture that continues to shape our community.

On Friday, Calgary Black Chambers and Heritage Park present the Annual Black History Month Dinner, featuring a 3-course gourmet dinner, Entertainment by local Black musicians, and a keynote presentation by author Cheryl Foggo.

Dancer Syreeta Hector performs her acclaimed Black Ballerina show at the Seton YMCA on Saturday and the Rocky Ridge YMCA on Sunday.

And on Sunday, join Canadian poet Bertrand Bickersteth for “Re-presenting the Lives and Language of Black Cowboys,” an exploration of black homesteaders and cowboys.

This is just the tip of the iceberg: for more Black History Month events, check out the events page of calgary.ca, and read our latest issue of The Scene magazine on stands now!

On Tuesday, head over to Two Pillars Brewery for general knowledge trivia, produced by Talespin Trivia! Gather a crew of up to 6 team members and live out your Jeopardy dream for only $5 a person. The games kick off at 6:30.

Have you been to Verns, Calgarys historic punk bar dive off Stephen Avenue? Did you know there’s a chaotic comedy show every Wednesday? Well, now you do and now you know where to go. Ratboy Comedy is anything but predictable, with both newcomers and seasoned comedy pros coming together to go truly wild on some improvised jokes. Doors are at 8, tickets are only 5 bucks, and you can even get onstage if you’re feeling extra funny; it is an open mic, after all.

The 2025 Exposure Photography Festival opens this Thursday and runs all month.  Engage with a wide variety of visual storytelling through juried open-call exhibitions and a diverse array of partner programming., including an emerging photographers showcase. Check it all out at Contemporary Calgary, and explore juried exhibitions and more for free on opening night!

This week is also your last chance to catch Don Pasquale, Calgary Opera’s second-last show of the season. The last two shows are this Wednesday and Friday at the Jubilee. Did you know storied baritone John Fanning came out of retirement to play the title role? Hear him belt it out two more times this week!

The Winter edition of the Calgary Tattoo and Arts Festival takes over the BMO Centre this weekend, with artists like Jenna Coffin and Ryan “The Scientist” Smith making an appearance. Tickets range in price and there’s tons of opportunities to grab a spontaneous flash tattoo, so head to albertatattooshows.com to plan your weekend out now!

Bangfest is a celebration of one-person drag theatre lighting up Dickens this Saturday, in collaboration with 50% Fruit Productions and Club Detour. Featuring three back-to-back shows by Queens Chelsea Horrendous, Lilith Fair and Uma Gahd, it’s a steal for the price: $20 per show, or $50 for all three! Fair’s performance of “Local Diva: The Danielle Smith Diaries” won the Volunteer “Pick of the Fringe” award at the 2024 Edmonton Fringe, and it’s sandwiched right in the middle of this three-show banger.

End the weekend where I spent most of my childhood: skating at Bowness Park. Touch a grizzly bear claw, measure your hand against a bear paw and much more at the Family Nature Skate on Sunday.

For more events and things to do around the city, grab our February issue of The Scene, on stands now.
