The CUFF Docs Documentary Film Fest kicks off this week with screenings at the Globe Cinema from Wednesday to Sunday. There are so many great showings, and it’s hard to narrow things down, but I highly recommend checking out the Film Industry Networking Event kickoff party on Tuesday at The Derrick, hosted by DOC Alberta. Then, catch the Devo documentary on Friday and swing by the Palomino for the after-party, featuring tons of local bands covering Devo, including yours truly. Hit calgaryundergroundfilm.org for information and tickets.
This is also your final week to check out Takao Tanabe: Printmaker, the first survey exhibition of Tanabe’s print works at Glenbow at The Edison. The distinguished Japanese-Canadian painter creates landscape portraits that capture the serene and expansive beauty of the natural world, and tickets to the exhibition are free over at glenbow.org. If you haven’t visited the Glenbow’s temporary new home, now is the time, and be sure to check out Benjamin Heisler’s feature on the exhibition in this month’s issue of The Scene.
Talespin Trivia returns to Citizen Brewing tonight, and they highly recommend you arrive before seven so you have time to snag some bevies and snacks before it starts. Teams of up to six are allowed, and it’s only $5 for a person to play. Grab a big Kahuna burger and a Batch 1 to keep things fresh before testing your knowledge!
The 7th annual Start Alberta Tech Awards will occur this Wednesday at Studio Bell! This shindig recognizes individuals and organizations contributing to Alberta’s innovation ecosystem and those significantly impacting the province’s tech sector. Whether deep in the industry or looking to pivot your way in, it’s a great event to network and immerse yourself in Calgary’s tech sector. Rip over to startalberta.ca for more details.
The next installment of the Housing Crisis monthly drag show at Congress Coffee is this Thursday, with special guest Noble Oney joining Dani Phantom and Comrade Yulia Borscht! Tickets are $15, and the show starts at 8. It’s 18+, so leave the kids at home and grab that Roast Beef sando that Congress offers: it’s sensational.
Also on Thursday, the Common Ground Festival celebrates its 10th year of bringing emerging indie theatre and performances to Calgary. This year’s edition features plays, poetry, stand-up comedy, and even animals? It all goes down at the Victor Mitchell Theatre, and each ticket gets you entry to all the plays that evening. Learn more at pumphousetheatre.ca.
Locked Library (as seen in the first pages of this month’s issue of The Scene) returns to Central Library this Friday with the brand-new game, FORCE OF NATURE! You have two hours to tackle a series of mind-bending puzzles and riddles at Calgary’s iconic Central Library, with all proceeds going to support the Calgary Public Library…. And who doesn’t love the library? Tickets are available at LibraryAfterDark.ca.
Local post-punk outfit Stucco is dropping an album this Saturday, and you’re invited to the Palomino Smokehouse to celebrate. Brass Lip, Non-Ultras, and Temps are opening the gig up, and local music weirdos Chris Dadge and Nate Waters will be joining Stucco onstage for their set! Doors are at 8, bands at 9, and tickets are only $15.99 in advance at thepalomino.ca.
I’ve got two fun ideas to end your weekend. Either head to The Confluence for a screening of The Wizard of Oz at 2 p.m. or swing by Chasin’ Tails dog daycare downtown for Pupchella, an indoor fun fair for pups and people raising money to support music therapy programs at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Alternatively, you can order soup from your favourite Vietnamese place and snuggle up inside; that also sounds good.
For more events and things to do around the city, grab our November issue of The Scene, which is on stands now.
