This week marks the Heritage Calgary Awards, a celebration of local history and the diversity of our shared home. This event occurs every second year and honours those who have preserved and promoted heritage in Calgary to help enrich our communities. Join Heritage Calgary on Thursday at The Confluence at 6:30 to appreciate what makes this city special.

Tuesdays are a total hoot at Dickens right now. Swing by the bar at 6 p.m. for a free Boulet Brothers Dragula show screening, followed immediately by They Got Talent at 7, a talent and variety show hosted by Karla Marx. Cover for the variety show is only $10!

Canadian dance-punk legends Death From Above 1979 are coming to The Palace this Wednesday with support from Teen Mortgage. The You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine just turned 20, and DFA is playing the whole thing back-to-back to celebrate. If that sounds a little too loud for you, Congress Coffee Shop is hosting a free all-ages acoustic jam hosted by Busker Bob that same night, starting at 7 p.m. The mic is open, so bring a guitar and sing some Wonderwall.

The Art Market Craft Sale kicks off this Thursday at the Telus Convention Centre and runs all weekend. Did you know 200+ artisans and crafters are selling wares at this market? There are also live bands, live demonstrations, hourly draws for gift certificates, and much more. Head to artmarketcraftsale.com and get a head start on Christmas gift shopping.

One of my favourite holiday traditions is Zoo Lights presented by Olympia Trust Company, and it begins this Friday for the winter season! Now might be a good time to check it out before Calgary freezes over fully. This year’s new areas include “The Festive Forest,” “Savannah Sparkle,” and glowing polar bears at Aurora Gardens.” Just be sure to grab some cookies and hot chocolate!

Ballet Bodies YYC presents In Motion III this Friday and Saturday at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. These shows feature a wild blend of ballet and contemporary dance, showcasing the intricate interplay of diverse movement styles and a chance to explore DJD’s space. The choreography of Alexandra Contreras, Barbara England, Edmund Stripe, and more leads the shows.

This Saturday marks volume 9 of the Palomino Smokeout LP Release Party. Every year, the barbecue palace puts together a vinyl record of hot tracks from local artists and throws a show to celebrate. And anyone who attends gets a free record… until supplies run out. This year’s edition features HARSH, Temps, Witch Victim, and many other amazing local acts. Tickets are $20 in advance on Showpass, less than buying most records at the store!

Charge yourself up for next week with Flow Fest at Studio 122 on Sunday. This yoga social event features a 90-minute ‘Superflow’ yoga + meditation class, followed by restorative yoga and sound bath and snacks… with a DJ! Flow Fest goes from 1 to 6 p.m. and offers an afternoon of mindfulness, fun, and connection, plus deep stretching.

Grab our November issue of The Scene on stands now for more events and things to do around the city.
