What To Do This Week (October 2 – 6)

YYC Trivia celebrates it’s 7th anniversary on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.(Photo by Nathan Iles

Head to Dickens tonight at 7 pm for They Got Talent, a weekly drag show hosted by Karla Marx and Rip Em that showcases new drag talent. Tickets are only 7 10 bucks, and you can register to strut your stuff at thecabaretcompany.com. Rip Em is moving to Ottawa at the end of the month, so let’s send them off in style!

Wednesday is a punk rock explosion at The Ship and Anchor. ‘90s Calgary punk heavy hitters Downway are headling, with support from local math-rock three-piece Oranje and the hardcore-influenced pop-punk of Turnarounds. Admission is always free at The Ship, so grab an extra Ship Canary; if you know, you know.

Test your knowledge of Gen X anthems this Thursday at Trivia Night at the District Beltline – 90’s Music edition! Hosted by Talespin Trivia, this event kicks off at 6:30 with admission under $10 online — more details are on Talespin’s Instagram page.

Kick off the weekend with stand-up comedy at the Bella Concert Hall at Mount Royal. Phil Hanley is here on Friday by way of Vancouver, though you might recognize him from The Tonight Show or the Amy Schumer movie I Feel Pretty. Doors are at 6:70, and the show is at 7:30; grab tickets at MRU’s website.

This weekend, experience the creativity of Calgary’s local artists at the annual State of Art YYC event, which has been celebrating the arts for over 15 years. This two-day showcase will be held at the Strathcona Community Centre, with viewing hours from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to handcrafted works, paintings by artists like Karen Biko and Jenna Anand will be featured.

Also on Saturday is Wild After Hours, an 18-plus event at the Calgary Zoo. Hang with the tigers Sarma and Vasili with an exclusive after-hours viewing in Exploration Asia, and then enjoy a four-course feast accompanied by a fascinating presentation about these magnificent animals.

And on Sunday, take the whole family to Crossroads Market and start getting in that spooky October spirit. Grab a pumpkin from a local vendor, check out local artisans’ wares, munch on some bougie candy and grab a sensational meal from the food hall. I recommend grabbing a 7-dollar currywurst from the Old Munich stand for a cheap lunch, just in time for Octoberfest! Our latest issue is loaded with more of the best deals at Crossroads, so grab it off stands when you can.

For more events and things to do around the city, grab the October issue of The Scene hitting stands this week.
