What To Do This Week (September 9 to 15)

Blind Dreamers by Sandra Geo, WildDogs International Screendance Festival

WWE is filming Monday Night Raw tonight at the Saddledome, which is a big deal with our wrestling history here in Calgary; Bret Hart is even slated to make an appearance! Make sure to get to the dome on time at 5:30 p.m.

Not one, not two, but three different plays are opening this week.

Handsome Alice and Verb Theatre presents Our Fathers, Sons, Lovers and Little Brothers, a Tarragon Theatre production associated with Black Theatre Workshop that opens this Thursday at Big Secret Theatre in Arts Commons.

Nunsense is a musical comedy from Front Row Centre at the Victor Mitchell Theatre inside the Pumphouse, which kicks off this Friday.

Alberta Ballet’s first production of the season is La Syphalide, one of the oldest surviving ballets in the world. It will be performed at the Jubilee Auditorium this weekend.

Inside Out Theatre’s production of Static, which opened last week, closes this Saturday. You can read more about that here!

A lot’s also happening at the Alcove Centre for the Arts on the train line near TD Square downtown. There’s a Spoken Word Performance Techniques Workshop and a lunchtime concert on Wednesday, and a beginner-friendly Comedy Workshop on Sunday. Check Alcove’s website and explore their calendar of events; there’s always something going on!

Grab a date and check out RomCom Trivia Night at The District At Beltline on Thursday, hosted by Talespin Trivia. Get your tickets at The Beltline’s website, and brush up on your Meg Ryan movies on your own time.

Or, if you want to watch a movie, go to High Park at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday for a rooftop screening of the Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. There’s nothing like a film surrounded by skyscrapers, especially when admission is free.

And if you want more free movies, go to Harmony Park in Chinatown on Saturday evening and join the Pop Up Movie Club for an environmentally-focused night of cinema. There’s a park clean-up scheduled at 6:45 p.m., followed by a free double feature of the documentary In Love with a Problem and the movie Mermaid.

Still hungry for cinema? The WildDogs International ScreenDance Film Festival runs at Decidedly Jazz DanceWorks all weekend. In addition to film screenings, both virtually and in-person, there are a variety of workshops that feature live excerpts and screenings of works that have moved from stage to screen or screen to stage.

The Zen Garden Music Festival takes over Waterfront Park on Saturday, capping the summer off with an all-day rave of techno, house music and drum ‘n beat. Then, head to the Back Alley for an evening anime rave: you heard me right.

And if you’re craving some sports, the Stamps are playing the Alouettes at McMahon Stadium this Saturday!

The Monster Jam Tour is roaring into Calgary this weekend, with two days of monster truck madness at GMC Stadium. I’ll never miss seeing the Grave Digger jump over some cars.

End the weekend with Laugh Loft Comedy at The Attic. Local performer Victoria Banner and drag queen superstar Karla Marx host this curated stand-up comedy show every Sunday. It’s femme-centered, queer-centric, and a whole lot of fun. Tickets are only ten bucks, and presenting sponsor Blindman Brewing offers $6 tall cans all night!
