MONDAY

We’re skipping Monday this week, giving ourselves a moment to ease back into post-holiday life.

TUESDAY

One of Broadway’s most legendary shows opens this week. Moulin Rouge!, winner of 10 Tony Awards, arrives in Calgary on Tuesday. Based on Baz Luhrmann’s film, the love story may be familiar, but it remains thrilling thanks to new choreography, dazzling costumes, and pure extravagance. Catch the show at Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at calgary.broadway.com.

WEDNESDAY

They say a good laugh can extend your life — so why not laugh more often? Head to Comedy Cave to see Thomas Nichols, a Dallas-based stand-up comedian known for his sharp observations on everything from politics to Fanta. Nichols is a nationally touring comic who offers a fresh, surprising, and humorous perspective to kick off the new year. Tickets start at $17 on Showpass.

THURSDAY

Die Fledermaus returns for its third year, becoming a growing Calgary tradition. The operetta follows Gabriel von Eisenstein as he delays going to jail to attend an extravagant party. The show begins at 7 p.m. at the Heather Edwards Theatre at Contemporary Calgary, with a pre-show chat at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30. Contemporary Calgary also offers free gallery admission on the first Thursday of the month.

FRIDAY

The Grand continues its run of cult classics. On Friday, catch Labyrinth, the surreal fantasy adventure set to the iconic soundtrack by David Bowie. The film starts at 7 p.m., and it’s an unspoken rule to arrive early for food and drinks at Bar & Snacks — this time featuring Portland Street Pizza. Tickets are $15 at thegrandyyc.ca.

SATURDAY

Celebrate Calgary’s underground music scene on Saturday at the YYC Underground Music Awards Ceremony, presented by Gulbar. The night will reveal the final winners selected from the three most-nominated artists in each category, followed by live performances from select nominees. Expect plenty of food, drinks, and energy. Tickets are $19 on Eventbrite.

SUNDAY

Wrap up the week with high-energy junior hockey as the Calgary Hitmen take on the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The game takes place at the Scotiabank Saddledome, with tickets starting at $31.
