What To Do This Week in Calgary (Dec. 16 – 22)

Sunglaciers.

The holidays are right around the corner, and honestly, it’s hard to find any events that aren’t holiday-themed! But if you give in to the yuletide spirit just a bit, there’s tons of fun to be had in Calgary this week.

Case in point: this is your last week to catch Twelve Days, a festive new musical from Joe Slabe of the Forte Musical Guild at Lunchbox Theatre. Set in the ‘60s, it’s a fun and touching tribute to young love around the holidays. The show closes on Saturday, so don’t miss out! Tickets are available at lunchboxtheatre.com.

Tonight, the 10th annual Murray and Peter Drag Queen Christmas invades the Jack Singer, featuring contestants who appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race and Canada’s Drag Race. It’s hosted by Brooke Lynn Hytes, and tickets are available at artscommons.ca.

If you’ve got young ones, Sylvia’s Holiday Hoopla is the place to be. Children’s singer Sylvia Chave is bringing two days of family-friendly music and fun to Robert McClure United Church this Monday and Tuesday, with all proceeds going to McClure Food Pantry. Check out Sylvia’s website for tickets and to listen to the Saskatchewan queen of swing-set music: singingwithsylvia.com.

Also on Tuesday is the funnest holiday movie night in town: Home Alone for the Holidays at The Grand! Catch the first two Home Alone flicks in the historic Flanagan Theatre, with freshly popped popcorn, hot slices from Portland Street Pizza, and brews from Eighty-Eight Brewing Co. on tap all night. Head over to thegrandyyc.ca for more details and to grab a ticket to one (or both) screenings!

Talespin Trivia is hosting their annual Christmas edition of “Six Degrees of Movie Trivia” at Dickens this Wednesday. Did you know admission is only five bucks? Did you know there are minigames in between every round where you can win prizes and free drinks? Check out the feature on Talespin in our December issue on stands now, and follow Talespin’s Instagram account for more information: @yyctrivia.

Create Your Own Festive Ornament this Thursday at Marriot Residence Inn Beltline District. Hosted by local painter Fatima Majoka, this two-hour art and craft workshop is a delightful way to create festive decor. You’ll dive into acrylic painting on wooden slices and craft your own ornament. Bring the kids along since it’s family-friendly! Check the Dots & Lines Eventbrite page for tickets and more information.

Friday night is The Palomino’s annual SockHop, a show raising funds for the Alpha House this year. Performers this year include Bridgeland, Sunglaciers, Brain Bent, & many more! Tickets are 20 bucks at the door, but only 15 if you bring a new pair of socks, underwear, gloves, toque or toiletries to donate.

Keep the live music vibes going on Saturday with the HOLIDAY SHOWCASE at the Ship and Anchor, featuring The Sadlier Brown Band and Denver Venoit. The tunes go from 2 till 5, and admission is totally free. There are even rumours of a visit from Santa! Grab a glass of legendary Ship-Nog while you’re at it, with a portion of every glass going to local charities.

End the weekend with Corks & Cookies at Market Wines University District on Sunday! Tasty holiday treats get paired with a variety of wines, which is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. Tickets are $30, the event starts at two and gets you home just in time to watch a holiday movie. I recommend The Holdovers!
