What To Do This Week (Jan. 27 – Feb. 2)

Have you had a chance to digitally explore the pyramids of Egypt at Chinook Mall yet? No? Well, you’re in luck because the Horizons of Khufu VR experience has extended its run here in Calgary till March 2. Head to the North Court part of the mall past Saks Fifth Avenue and explore the Nile right here in Cowtown. But if you want my advice, try to go on a weekday, as it’s much less busy.

But there’s lots to do this week that doesn’t involve going to a mall. On Monday, check out Drag Bingo hosted by local queen Lilith Fair at Dickens. The event promises “prizes, performances, and perversity,” and best of all, your 10-dollar admission includes your first bingo card! It’s a chaotic night that you can’t miss.

Every Tuesday at 8 p.m., Crosswalk Comedy takes over Civic Tavern, a historic haunt for those of us who remember The Hop & Brew. This is an open mic show, so there will be a mix of amateur and professional comedians. In their own words, “It can be super funny or so super bad that it is funny!” Message @crosswalk.comedy on Instagram if you have the nerve to get onstage yourself. And hey, admission is free, so you’ve got no excuses.

Wednesday is the next meetup of the Chinatown Clay Club, a low-cost ceramics program that offers a space to develop basic hand-building skills. There’s multiple price points, with the lowest being $17 if you have to bring your own clay, and all proceeds benefit Good Neighbour‘s free clothing store, providing clothing, food, and other essential items to those in need.

Thursday is Radio Retro trivia night over at The Establishment Brewing Company. Presented by Talespin Trivia, this trivia night will focus on 70s, 80s, 80s, and early 00s music, with only $5 admission and some of the best beer in Calgary on tap (My Best Friend’s Girl kolsch is a personal favourite of mine). Get in and flex those music ears!

Chinook Blast presents Chinook Poetry Reading on Friday at The Confluence, a special poetry reading featuring the winners of The Confluence’s second annual Chinook Poetry Competition. Kelly Kaur, Jessica Cheng, and many more will be doing readings of their work, followed by a mix and mingle community reception afterwards. Admission is free and all-ages, with readings starting at 7:30.

The Calgary Motorcycle and Powersports Show is running all weekend at BMO Centre for the two-wheel inclined. Presented by NFP, check out some of the most anticipated bike models for 2025, even including some electric models. Tickets are super affordable with full-family price points offered as well, so head over to motocanada.com to grab them!

End your weekend by finishing off the High Performance Rodeo. Dancer and choreographer Kunji Ikeda has deconstructed Dostoevsky’s CRM&PNSHMNT and put it back together again, re-interpreting this classic Russian revenge story as a Dance Theatre Clown event. The show opens at the Pumphouse on Wednesday and closes on Sunday, the final day of the rodeo.
