What To Do This Week (Feb. 10 – 16)

Calgary Folk Music Festival‘s Block Heater returns to downtown Calgary this weekend, and it’s the perfect way to light up these frigid nights. I plan to be at the Palace on Friday to catch local post-punk freaks Sunglaciers open up for Black Mountain and the Legion #1 on Saturday for TEKE::TEKE, who blew my mind at the folk festival last summer. Maybe I’ll see you around? Check out calgaryfolkfest.com for the full lineup and pass information!

I don’t know about you, but the week really starts to hit me on Tuesday. The Ship & Anchor’s punk rock bingo is the perfect antidote to early-week blues. No cover, loud tunes, and prizes to be won; how can you go wrong? The last time I played, I almost won a minifridge, and some folks wound up onstage trying to jump without moving their knees. It was madness. Make your way to the Ship at seven and grab a dobber, no door cover as per usual.

This Wednesday is the latest Pizza 101 class at Lina’s in Inglewood. Learn the art of pizza-making from scratch from master pizza baker Scott Heine and make a whole night of it! Spots fill up quickly, however, so book your spot now.

Head over to Calgary’s newest military-history-themed brewery, Buffalo 9, for general trivia night this Thursday, hosted by Talespin Trivia. Entry is only five bucks per person, and the rounds range from pop culture to history! If you’re a Jeopardy fan, this is your chance to live the dream. You can find information on all of Talespin’s events this month on their Instagram page, @yyctrivia.

Later that same night, camoufly takes the downstairs Commonwealth stage on his latest North American tour. From hyperpop to trap and pop, your head will be spinning, and your rumpus will be shaking all night. Tunes start at 9 pm, and all the deets can be found at commonwealthbar.ca.

Let’s not forget Valentine’s Day this weekend, either, and whether you’re with a partner, a friend, or riding solo, there’s lots to do. The 31st annual In the Heat of the Night event at the Zoo is the perfect 18+ event, with a four-course dinner and a special presentation on how animals “show their love” in the wild. Saucy! That goes from Thursday to Saturday, and tickets sell out quickly, so get on it!

On Friday, The Palomino is having its own little rockabilly V-day celebration. Huggin’ and a Kissin’ with Hurricane Felix & The Manik Men, Pepper Box and The Sour Patch Men start at 8 pm, though if you go early, you can grab some garlic fries to make your breath smell lovely for your special someone. Check out the Palomino’s website for ticket information! And if you’re looking for more date ideas, check out the latest issue of The Scene, which features a list of “cinematic” date ideas courtesy of local writer Celina Vides.

Kick the long weekend off with the HANGOVER “A GOOD TIME” party at the resurrected and better-than-ever Back Alley Nightclub. Dancing, drinking, good vibes, and cheap tickets: whether you’re blowing off steam from the week or just getting started for the next, it’s the place to be.
