Every Monday, head over to Boogie’s Burgers in Renfrew and Marda Loop for free arcade games. Save your quarters for a massive burger and kick-back with retro classics like Ms. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Don’t forget to try the April feature mini eggs milkshake for some Easter fun while you’re there.
If you’re looking for something more hands-on, Fuse 33 is running a two-day class on Monday and Tuesday where you can make your own carbon-steel utility knife. The class is expensive, at $305 per person, but it’s a cool way to get started without shelling out for all the equipment yourself if you’re looking for a new hobby.
Head to Greta on Tuesday for karaoke night. Sing your heart out with your friends, and in between your sets, Greta has $5 tequila shots and half-off tacos to keep you going through the night. If you’re not a singer, all of Greta’s arcade games are half-price. There’s no cover to get in, so save money for all those tacos.
The Calgary Underground Film Festival kicks off on Thursday with a screening of Friendship at the Globe Cinema, a new nightmare-comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd. The festival runs until April 27, with a schedule filled with new films and plenty of fun activities. For example, on Friday, hit up the Globe for their Indie Game Bash and compete in a Goldeneye competition! Our April issue has tons of CUFF coverage, including a list of films you should see.
Sports fans have lots to choose from this Easter weekend. On Friday and Sunday, the Cavalry FC plays its first two home games of the season at ATCO Field. The Calgary Wranglers hit the ice to face off against the San Jose Barracudas at the ‘Dome on those same days. Grab tickets on each of the team’s websites.
This Saturday marks your last chance to catch Every Brilliant Thing by Verb Theatre at the Pumphouse. This new play from Duncan MacMillan deals with some dark themes, but it’s full of laughs to make up for it. If you hit Verb Theatre on closing night, you’ll be treated to free popcorn and a colouring table, plus the chance to win that very popcorn machine! Tickets are tiered starting at $20, so pay what you’re willing at the door or on Verb’s site.
Easter weekend typically includes fluffy bunnies and baby chicks. But if you’re into critters a little more scaly, the Western Canada Reptile Expo runs Saturday through Sunday at the Acadia Recreation Complex. You’ll get the chance to see a variety of reptiles, from colourful chameleons to slithering snakes. You’ll also have the chance to get up close and personal with the animals through interactive exhibits. It’s a family-friendly event – kids get in for just $8, and adult tickets are $13.
Close out Easter weekend with the Sin and Gin Soiree Cabaret at the Erratics Indie Arts Club. The night’s theme is “Green Eggs and Glam,” so hop over for a night of music, drag and comedy with one of Calgary’s longest-running monthly drag shows. Whether you’ve got something to celebrate this weekend or want to get away from the holiday hubbub, this is a great way. It’s $20 at the door, but bring a few small bills for drinks and tipping performers.
