When Katie Wackett started working at the National accessArts Centre, she noticed a gap in their programming and decided to create a film department for people with disabilities.
“I love collaborating with the artists and the problem solving of how do you write a screenplay when you can’t see or if you can’t use a computer,” Wackett said. “It’s such a cool thing, and it’s very fulfilling to see people’s films come to life and their voices come through.”
She also volunteers with the Calgary Underground Film Festival and runs a series at the Globe Cinema called A League of Their Own, which screens films directed by women, non-binary and trans people.
- “The Globe Cinema. I basically live there. They curate the best films, and the staff is amazing. Best popcorn in town. I’m always hanging out at the Globe.
- ”The next one would be the Lazy Loaf & Kettle. It’s a coffee shop. Amazing coffee and pastries, and I love just getting a coffee and going for a walk by the river. [My favourite thing to get is] peanut butter cheesecake and a mocha.”
3. “My 3rd one would be … Style Encore. It’s like a consignment store, but they have the best clothes. I love to find a good thrift deal.”
4. “My next one would be Rain Dog Bar. I love that their menu is like a little zine, and they always have a crossword to do. I love to get a glass of wine and have some good food and just chill out with friends.”
5. “Then my last one … would be Hemlock Tattoo. [It is] my favourite tattoo parlour in town, run by 4 amazing artists, and I just love getting tattooed there. Their work is amazing.” —JM
