She may not be an artist in the conventional sense, but you might catch a glimpse of Janice Manchul’s work if you’re out and about in the arts and theatre community. Manchul has dedicated three decades to working as a professional sign language interpreter, and she can’t imagine doing anything else.

As the co-founder of Freelance Interpreters Consolidated (FLIC) Inc., she is a familiar presence in the city’s performing arts community, serving as an interpreter. Sign language is her first language, and working alongside deaf advisors informs her practice while honouring the deaf, deafblind, and hard-of-hearing communities that have supported her work over the years.

  1. CB Rescue Foundation. “When our household was ready for another ‘fur child,’ this volunteer-run organization helped match us with the right companion. Their care and dedication never go unnoticed.”
  2. Big Hill Springs Provincial Park. “A short and refreshing escape from the city. It’s the perfect place to sit, pause and enjoy nature.”
  3. +15 Skywalk. “My go-to route when working downtown. It’s a great way to navigate the city while staying out of the winter cold, especially helpful during white-out conditions earlier this year.”
  4. Esker Foundation. “A hidden gem away from the city’s bustle. I especially enjoy the interactive exhibits that invite visitors to engage with the artwork.”
  5. Calgary Bike Pathways. “Calgary’s pathway system offers a wonderful way to travel through the city. The route between Calgary and Chestermere is a favourite, with a flat trail along the irrigation canal and frequent wildlife sightings.”
