Weaving Creativity

In a digitally-run world, interest in fine crafts and community has grown in Calgary.

For Calgarians looking to explore a world of woodwork and weaving, the Alberta Craft Council is spotlighting Tools of the Weave by Sara Young. Located in cSPACE Marda Loop and running from March 21 to May 16, Young’s SPOTLIGHT exhibit breathes life into weaving tools, each holding its own story and purpose.

Based in Cochrane, Young brings forth her woodworking skills to create tactile weaving tools, such as shuttles, needles, and looms. When it comes to choosing hardwood, Young opts for colourful, unique pieces that let their personality shine through.

Jill Nuckles, manager of the Alberta Craft Gallery and Shop, says that even with the rise of digital spaces and the use of artificial intelligence, more people are seeking handmade objects rather than mass-produced pieces.

“I think the more things swing one way and people are in their house by themselves doing their online thing, the more that’s going to swing back the other way, where people want to connect with materials,” she said. “Who doesn’t love clay or learning how to make a friendship bracelet?”

While there is plenty of representation for art materials like drawings and paintings, the Alberta Craft Council specializes in supporting fine craft and art that you can touch. With the expert craftsmanship, you can feel the cool grooves of the wood and the smooth sanded surfaces.

“I thought it was a really nice way to highlight something handmade, and if you walk over there and feel those tools, they feel really beautiful,” Nuckles said.

Nuckles doesn’t want people just to spectate. In her mind, art is about sharing an experience.

“We have many workshops here that are a taste of a kind of craft. Last week, we did linocut cards, and they sold out. I think people really want to learn to make their own thing and have an experience,” Nuckles said. “I think that did change with COVID when people were locked away, and people realized how much they valued an experience.”

When it comes to visiting the Alberta Craft Gallery and experiencing Young’s exhibit, Nuckles hopes visitors find the beauty and connection in handmade work.

In her eyes, people can be involved with fine craft in different ways, whether it’s buying a gift from the shop or simply learning something new.

“It’s another way to connect for people,” she said.
