Enjoy Victoria Day—a stat everyone forgets about but always appreciates—with Victoria Day Afternoon Tea on the Verandah, which celebrates the opening of Historical Village at Heritage Park. Sip fresh tea, devour some sandwiches, and enjoy sweet pastries from the Alberta Bakery in the Famous 5 Centre. Then, explore the Historical Village. Multiple seatings start at 11:30 a.m.; grab tickets for your preferred time at heritagepark.ca.

And if beer is more your vibe than tea, head to the Ship & Anchor this Monday and catch some English Premier League football—or soccer, depending on what you want to call it. Brighton takes on my father-in-law’s favourite team, Liverpool, and the game starts at 1 p.m. our time. Pair it with a Ship Canary and the chicken fajita salad; thank me later.

Two major plays are opening this Tuesday. Theatre Calgary’s production of Legally Blonde opens at the Max Bell, running till June 15. And Broadway Across Canada is bringing SIX to the Jubilee from Tuesday to Saturday. Both shows promise New York-style spectacle and tons of femme energy, so don’t miss out! And if you act quickly with Theatre Calgary, you can even grab some cheaper Theatre for All tickets at only $44. Check out theatrecalgary.com and calgary.broadway.com for tickets to both shows.

Woo Hoo! Classic Simpsons Trivia returns to Dickens this Wednesday, now hosted by Talespin Trivia. What is “Classic Simpsons,” you may ask? Think the first ten seasons of a show now in the middle of its 36th! Entry is only $5 and the games start at 7, with an episode screened in the bar before trivia properly starts.

Sled Island is taking over Rocking 4 Dollar$ this Thursday at the BLOX Arts Centre. There’s an industry panel from 7 to 8 p.m. with Sled Island staff and artists talking about the ins and outs of being a touring musician, and if you go to that panel, entry to the show is free! Bands start at 8:30, with acts like SHY FRiEND and Tea Fannie hitting the stage. It’s all ages, and if you’ve never been to R4$ before, you must stay for the prize wheel at the end!

Also, Hot Dogs and Hot Takes on History are at The Confluence on Thursday. This ongoing panel series offers spirited and thought-provoking debates on social topics while gobbling down glizzy’s. What’s not to love? This addition features Calgary counsellor Courtney Walcott, who takes on the idea of judging figures from the past and what we can learn about the present. Tickets are only $15, and the event starts at 7 PM.

The Calgary Black Film Festival starts this Friday and runs until next Thursday at the Globe Cinema. This festival not only artistically shares the experiences of Black people but also supports and uplifts the local independent film industry. The festival’s first film is Fight Like a Girl by Matthew Leutwyler. The full schedule can be found at calgaryblackfilm.com.

Seminal Edmonton punks Raygun Cowboys are celebrating 25 years this Friday at Dickens with a stacked lineup of Local heavy hitters, Quit It! and Class Action opening the show. Doors open nice and early at 6, and tickets are only $20, so strap on your best moshing shoes and get out there.

Spring Local: A Small Business Market occurs at Rooftop YYC this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Support local businesses and discover unique products and services from various vendors while enjoying the spring-themed decor. And hey, there’s even a bar if you get thirsty! If you want to keep your dollars local, this is a great place to be.

Also on Saturday is the East Town Get Down, a multi-venue music festival that takes place all day on International Avenue in Forest Lawn. Kiwi Junior and Marbled Eye are headlining, and the bill is stacked with notable locals like Ginger Beef and Stucco. All the shows take place in unconventional venues built right inside restaurants along the street, where you can also enjoy tons of international food. Check out our festival coverage, and grab a pass ASAP!

One of Canada’s longest-running marathons commences this Saturday and Sunday. The Servus Calgary Marathon is now in its 61st year and has raised millions for various charities. If you want to run, register at calgarymarathon.com and pick one of six different distances.

Wrap the weekend up on Sunday with Australian singer-songwriter Ziggy Alberts, who is bringing his low-key brand of folk rock to MacEwen Hall at the end of this week. Or, alternatively, use our guide to patios to find your next favourite spot to hang out with some cold ones.
