Get crafty with the InglewooDIY Festival, running until the 25th. Businesses all around the neighbourhood are getting involved with fun workshops and demos, like tufted rug making on Wednesday and fermentation on Saturday. There will also be quick and easy activities throughout the festival for free or by donation, including DIY wall hangings and button making.
If you’re a fan of TV classic Columbo, be sure to grab a ticket for Prescription: Murder at Workshop Theatre before it closes this Saturday; it’s the play that was later adapted into the show’s pilot episode! On Monday, the Calgary Reads Big Book Sale opens up for everyone. After its first three days of reservation-only shopping, the sale is set to run until Sunday. Dig through the piles of paperbacks down at the Calgary Curling Club and see what hidden gems you can find.
After you’ve got all the books you can carry, walk up Memorial over to Hexagon Board Game cafe for their biweekly puzzle playoff. Bring up to four of your friends and race to be the first to finish a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. Winners get their choice of a 1000-piece puzzle to take home.
If you prefer playing board games with your furry friends, hit Four Dogs Brewing Company on Tuesday for cribbage night. Both beginners and experienced players are welcome. Play while sipping on a Great Dane Stout or German (Pointed) Pilsner, with your supportive pooch right by your side in Four Dog’s pup-friendly taproom.
Get into the rom-com mood on Wednesday night and head to Globe Cinema for Party Girl. This little flick promises 94 minutes of fun as party girl Mary turns her life around as a library clerk and falls for her local falafel vendor. This film is part of the A League of Their Own film series. Tickets are 13 bucks, available at the door or on the Globe’s site.
Market season is kicking into high gear. Start by making your way over to cSpace in Marda Loop on Thursday evening for the Flavours and Find Night Market. From 6 to 10 p.m., local vendors sell handmade ceramics, candles, and artwork.
But the real star of the evening is the food. And if you’ve any dietary restrictions, you’ll be spoilt for choice, with various allergy-friendly, gluten-free and vegan options for sale. Tickets to the market are free, so pick them up from cSpace’s site.
If you still have some cash in your pocket, go down to the East Village for the Easy Days Market. Running from 12 to 5 p.m., the Riverwalk plaza will be packed with 40+ vendors selling crafts, food, and vintage and homemade clothes to fill your summer wardrobe. It’s free to attend, plus you can take your dog along.
For folks dying to show off their musical chops, go to the newly opened Semantics Cafe for their first-ever open mic event on Sunday. It runs from 1 to 5 p.m., so grab yourself a cup of coffee and a peach-and-cream croissant to keep you going. Enjoy Calgary’s little-known musical talents at no cost, whether you’re performing or just watching. Be sure to reserve a spot on Semantics’ website so it doesn’t fill up!
