What To Do This Week (September 23 to 30)

Do you feel it, Calgary? Fall is in the air and the spooky season approaches!

Get Halloween started early this weekend with Vertigo Theatre’s production of The Woman in Black, opening Saturday. This haunting ghost story has been adapted into several different movies (including one with Daniel Radcliffe), and now it hits the Calgary stage!

If the young ones can’t sit in a dark theatre, take the family to Calaway Park for Halloweekend, where dressing up in costume is encouraged, and spooky parades rule the park. Halloweekend only runs until Calaway closes for the season on October 14, so get your scares in quickly!

The Calgary International Film Festival marches on this week, bringing tons of scares to the city. I recommend catching Dark Match, a wrestling/horror movie mashup shot here in Alberta. Dark Match screens Thursday at the Globe and Saturday at Chinook Cineplex; check CIFF’s website for more details!

Catch an intimate evening with Paul Gross tonight when he sits down with Dave Kelly at the Martha Cohen Theatre to discuss his life and acting career ahead of headlining Alberta Theatre Project’s next season. You might know Gross from Passchendaele or the show Due South, but to me, he’s always been Chris Cutter from Men With Brooms. Things start around 7:30 p.m. Get tickets from albertatheatreprojects.com.

Humpday is packed this week! Six Degrees of Movie Trivia is sponsored by CIFF this week, with Philips drink specials and minigames going down all night at Dickens.

Just down the street from Dickens, catch local post-punk band Brain Bent kick off its BC tour with an all-ages show at Loophole Coffee Bar with Eye of Newt and Sub//Cell.

Wordfest is hosting a conversation with Alex Sarian, President and CEO of Arts Commons, about his new book The Audacity of Relevance: Critical Conversations on the Future of Arts and Culture at Central Library. Pre-order the book for pick-up, and Alex will sign it after the event on Wednesday!

YYC Pizzafest began last week, and this week, I recommend heading to Dandy Brewing and trying their Bigfoot Dominator. It’s a giant New York-style pie with perhaps too much pepperoni. Pizza Fest runs until October 6, so grab every chance you can to enjoy some za.

Calgary’s Night Light Festival returns this week! The festival includes interactive art installations, projection-mapped architecture, and live performances. The free festival will be held in Victoria Park, while installations will take over Haultain Park, Central Memorial Park, and The District at Beltline. The fun begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday and runs all weekend!

If you haven’t experienced Calgary’s vibrant vogue-ing scene yet, the Back to School Kiki Ball is where you need to be. Presented by Prince Cardi Galore, this shindig takes over the basement of Twisted Element this Saturday, with walkers competing in categories like best dress, sex siren and realness. It’s 10 bucks to attend, but only five bucks if you want to walk the runway yourself. The Ball starts at 5:30 this Saturday, so don’t waste time.

Wind things down on Sunday with a tour of murals around the Connaught area of the Beltline with BUMP or a Macramé Feather Keychain Wristlet Workshop at the Alcove Centre for the Arts. Both events are low-cost ways to immerse yourself in Calgary arts and culture. Check Alcove and Bump Festival’s website for more details and scheduling.

Pick up the September issue of The Scene for more events and things to do around the city.
