What To Do This Week (June 30 – July 6)

It’s Canada Day on Tuesday, and while we can’t party it up in Olympic Plaza, there’s still plenty of celebrations all over Calgary.

Head over to The Confluence for a day full of fun events, and a free concert on the mainstage with acts like Ginger Beef, The Witching Hour, and Sam Roberts Band.

Across the river, there are more concerts over on St Patrick’s Island, along with food vendors and face painting for the kiddos.

If you’d prefer to stay out of the heat, head over to Studio Bell, which has free admission for Canada Day and a lineup of live entertainment and activities for the whole family. After checking that out, head over to the King Eddy, which will open at 11 a.m. for a full day of all-ages performances, including folk duo Meadowsweet and country artist Jake Mathews.

On Wednesday, there’s an event just for the ladies over at the Sparrow Artspace in Bridgeland. Pack up whatever craft project you’ve been working on and head over for the second-ever Stitch & B.I.T.C.H circle. It’s a spot for women to come together, craft, and support one another. So finish up that crochet you’ve left on the back burner and air out all your grievances with some soon-to-be friends. It’s totally free, but be sure to register ahead of time over on sparrowartspace.com.

Head down to Stephen Ave on Thursday for the First Flip Pancake Breakfast. Stampede isn’t really here until you’ve had your first Stampede breakfast, so kick it off right with not just pancakes, but also live music and entertainment right in the heart of the city. Breakfast kicks off at 7:30 a.m. and runs until 10:30 a.m.

On Friday, take a break from the Greatest Show on Earth for something a little more low-key, with FunnyFest’s Stampede of Laughs over at Offside Pub on Centre. Sit back and enjoy some laughs, and cheer as loud as you can for the chance to win one of the $500 500-worth of prizes. There are three headliners set to perform, and doors to the show open at 7 pm. Grab tickets for $25 over on Eventbrite.

If you want to take in some live music this weekend without paying Stampede prices, head on over to containR park in Sunnyside this Saturday for the third annual RippleFest. Jam out to artists you’ve never heard of before and pay absolutely nothing for it.

Pick up a new hobby on Sunday with the start of Good Neighbour and Chinatown Clay Club’s new 4-week beginner hand-building clay class. The class costs $200 and runs for four weeks on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. All the materials are provided in the class, and your hand-sculpted creations will be fired at the end of the course. No experience required. Find the sign-up link over on Chinatown Clay Club’s Instagram.
