What To Do This Week (June 17 – 22)

Sled Island is here, and whether you’ve got tickets or not, you’ll get to join in on the fun with Sled’s opening party and poster sale tonight. Head over to Sled Village at Haus of Spanic Arts at 5 p.m. and meet fellow festival-goers, grab a beer and jam out to a DJ. While the party is free, be sure to bring some cash along for the limited edition, screen-printed posters from acts performing at the festival. And don’t miss The Scene’s showcase show on Friday at Pinbar, starting at 2 p.m. BB BOMB, Puppet Wipes, and many more will be tearing it up, and our editorial team will be on-site with high-fives aplenty!

Check out a brand new art exhibition at the Esker Foundation. First Things First is a sculptural piece by local artist Anna Semenoff that explores how the structures we build impact us. Admission is always free, and the gallery offers complimentary parking for up to 90 minutes.

The Shakespeare Company returns the Bard for one more show this season with Much Ado About Nothing, which opens on Thursday at West Village Theatre. This coproduction with Full Circle Theatre promises a darker edge to Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedy, full of witty insults that still sting to the modern ear. The show runs until June 28, and tickets are $28, with $25 tickets available for students and seniors.

Meanwhile, Lunchbox Theatre’s Stage One festival wraps up this Friday with two new play readings in the Devonian Gardens at the Core. The readings start at 3 p.m. with the cerebral Rupert’s Land by James Hart, and continue at 4:30 with the post-apocalyptic The Last 1.5 Librarians North of Lethbridge by Anna Leslie. A talk-back with Luncbox artistic director Bronwyn Steinberg follows both readings. It’s completely free to attend, so reserve your spot at lunchboxtheatre.com.

Grab the leash and doggie treats because you and your pooch have a great afternoon lined up on Saturday with the 2nd annual Dachshund Dash at Century Downs racetrack. Arrive early at 12:45 if you’d like to see some horse racing, but the real fun begins at 4 pm when the dachshunds take to the track. Get a hot dog from The Starting Gate food truck, and check out the Parachute for Pets animal thrift shop. And if the cuteness gets too much for you, grab yourself a drink from Screaming Retriever Brewing Co. or Happy Dogs Wine, which will both have samples on sale at the event. Admissions and parking are free, so feel free to bring the whole family.

Indigenous fashion will take over Southcentre Mall on Sunday with Rez in the City 2.0. As part of Southcentre Mall’s Indigenous History Month celebrations, this fashion show will serve looks, live music, and powwow dancing. Take a break from your mall crawl at 8 p.m. to check out Indigenous designers and performers, with standing tickets starting at only $27. Grab your tickets here.

For more events and things to do around the city, grab our June issue of The Scene, which is on stands now.
