MONDAY

For all the fans of the red-haired girl, Anne of Green Gables is on stage this month. This time, Rosebud Theatre presents a fresh take on the classic story, placing greater focus on the relationship between Anne and Gilbert Blythe. Start your week with a little sweet romance. The show runs through September 5, with ticket options for the performance alone or for dinner-and-theatre packages.

TUESDAY

On the slightly nerdier side, Contemporary Calgary hosts a lecture for anyone interested in language models and their impact on society. In the Heather Edwards Theatre, Dr. Brian Dillon will discuss current debates about human language and the role AI and linguistic science play in understanding what makes us human. Presented with support from the University of Calgary, the event is free to attend with registration.

WEDNESDAY

I bet many of us have been waiting for Wednesday, because that’s when Sled Island kicks off. Running throughout the week, the festival celebrates music across genres with a lineup of local and international artists. Beyond music, expect comedy, conferences and special events, including karaoke nights, drag pop-ups and more. Most tickets range from $15 to $30, while some events are free.

We’ll also be hanging out at The Palomino with magazines, posters, and good vibes, so come say hi.

THURSDAY

Canada takes on Qatar in World Cup action, and you can catch the match on a giant LED screen at the Eau Claire World Cup Party. Bring your family and friends to cheer on Team Canada, meet mascots, and take part in interactive drills led by Cavalry FC and Calgary Wild FC. The party starts at 4 p.m., is free and open to all ages, and yes, there will be food.

FRIDAY

Dance your way at The GRAND for the 15th anniversary celebration of PULSE Studios. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. with the Beast Machine Party, followed by the 15th Anniversary Battle at 7 p.m. The party is free to attend, while battle tickets are $25.

SATURDAY

If Calgary’s unpredictable weather decides to give us some sunshine, Saturday could be a perfect day for a picnic. Join the Big ass Picnic (yes, that’s the actual name) at High Park for music, games, food, and good vibes. Gather your friends and enjoy an afternoon outdoors. The event starts at 3 p.m., with tickets available for $22.63 on Eventbrite.

SUNDAY

This Sunday marks not only the summer solstice but also National Indigenous Peoples Day and Father’s Day. As you can imagine, celebrations are happening all over the city. Experience Indigenous voices and stories through special programming at Heritage Park and Studio Bell, or treat dad to a buffet at the Calgary Zoo. Most importantly, spend some time with the people you love.
