What To Do This Week (July 7)

Monday

Gather up your friends and make some new ones with Queer Calgary’s Arts and Crafts night over at Bell’s Cafe and Bookstore. The craft nights take place every Monday from 7 to 9 p.m., and you don’t have to spend a dime to take part in the fun. Bell’s provides free basic cups of coffee, tea, and pop, and if you’re lucky, day-old baked goods. Pack up whatever project you’re working on and head over for an evening of socializing and good vibes.

Tuesday

If you’re more into sports than arts and crafts, then check out the Ship & Anchor’s Ship Out event on Tuesday. Cavalry FC is playing Vancouver FC over at the ATCO field, and for $37, get yourself a ticket to the game and a ride to the stadium on the Midnight Madness Coach. Included with your ticket is a coupon for a free pint of Big Rock while you wait for your fellow passengers to arrive. After the game is over, the coach will drop you off right back at the Ship, so you can grab drinks to celebrate the win or mourn the loss. Tickets are available over on shipandanchor.evenbrite.com.

Wednesday

Hump day brings another round of Trivia Killed the Radio Star music trivia over at Dickens, co-hosted by your truly and produced by Talespin Trivia. Recruit up to six of your most musically-minded friends to beat out the competition. Doors open at 6 p.m. and trivia kicks off at 7, so grab yourself a drink and sample the Dickens fry bar while you wait. Entry is $5 per person, paid at the door.

Thursday

The second edition of the Kensington Night Market is happening this Thursday from 4:30 to 8:30 pm. Head over to the parking lot near Original Joe’s and bring some cash to shop with local vendors, enjoy live music, food trucks, and games.

Friday

If you’ve ever wondered what wonderful things you could make with a laser cutter, you’ve got a chance to learn all about it with Fuse 33’s laser cutting and engraving class on Friday. For $63, you’ll get an intro class on how the laser cutter works, what materials you can use with it, and ideas on what you’re able to create. The class is all inclusive, so all you need to bring is yourself. Sign up for the class over at fuse33.com.

Saturday

Get away from the Stampede hubbub with a quick drive out of the city to the Banff Centre’s Summer Arts Festival. This Saturday, head over to the Banff Centre’s new venue, CLVB ‘33, for free Piano Bar Nights, starting at 7:30 p.m. Sit back with your favourite drink and enjoy an evening of jazzy tunes up close and personal with the artists.  The night is 18-plus, so bring your ID and some cash for the bar.

Sunday

If you’d rather stay at home for the weekend, then wrap up the Stampede season at Ranchmans with their Saddle Up Sober party on Saturday. This is an all-ages event with live music, dancing, and free mechanical bull rides. The party starts at 1 p.m. and runs until 4. The free tickets have all been claimed, but you can still purchase $20 VIP tickets, which include the added bonus of allowing you to skip the line upon entry.
