Something in the air has got Calgary in the mood for music trivia this week. Tonight, head over to Cabin Brewing for Name That Tune, a quiz night hosted by Trivia Daddy. As they put it, “Big music brains win prizes!” Tickets are only ten bucks, and that includes your first drink.

Then, swing by Dickens on Thursday for the final edition of Trivia Killed The Radio Star, hosted by Talespin Trivia. Entry to this event is only five bucks, and hosts Alan Johnson and Ife Abiola keep the good times rolling with minigames, prizes all night, and more. You can read more about these trivia nights and others in our December issue of The Scene magazine, which features a deep dive into Calgary’s trivia scene by Abbey Whitehead.

And if you’re still looking for low-cost fun, hit Punk Rock Bingo at the Ship and Anchor. Admission is always free, and the tunes spun by DJ RO-B1 are always loud. Punk Rock Bingo happens every Tuesday at 7 p.m., so bring your game face and try not to get dauber ink on your hands or beer on your sheets!

Did you know Calgary is a hotspot for Canada’s puppet theatre scene? Dive in this Wednesday when the Festival of Animated Objects brings A WONDERHEADS Christmas Carol to Decidedly Jazz Dance Studio. This Victoria-based puppet troupe is re-telling Scrooge’s story with no words and tons of whimsy that pulls heavy inspiration from Muppet’s Christmas Carol. You can’t miss this if you’re like me, and that’s your favourite version of this story. The show runs till Saturday, and tickets are available at puppetfestival.ca. And while you’re at it,  check our preview article on the show, written by yours truly.

Also on Wednesday is a Holiday Pairing Dinner at Eighty-Eight Brewing Company. Enjoy a five-course meal from Portland Street Pizza, with beer pairings for each course guided by one of the founders! What a lovely way to spend hump day. Tickets are $60, which is a steal when you consider you get five beers out of the deal.

As you may know, Elton John recently completed his final tour and didn’t even have the good sense to stop in Calgary! But lucky for you, dear listener, the next best thing is in town this Friday. Elton Rohn is a tribute show that combines the look, the feel, and the sound of the real thing and has headlined over 400 shows worldwide. Catch Elton Rohn at the Grey Eagle this Friday, and for more information, hit greyeagleresortandcasino.ca.

For something totally different, head down Stephen Avenue to the Palace for The 9th Annual Funk The Halls, featuring Canadian EDM legends The Funk Hunters. Expect a live audio-visual show operated simultaneously from four turntables and two mixers by the DJ duo and special guest openers. Bring some dancing shoes!

Rejoice: it’s Market Collective: Holiday Market season! The first edition of this adorable market will take over Hall D of the BMO Centre all weekend long, with more than 150 vendors, interactive workshops, live performances, galleries, and tons of good food. Have you done any holiday shopping yet? Because now is the time.

Wrap the weekend with a double-header of unconventional Christmas movie screenings at The Confluence. Catch ‘80s creature feature classic Gremlins on Saturday and the original kid classic Home Alone flick on Sunday, both screening in the afternoons at the Burnswest Theatre. Here’s the cool thing: tickets are only $12, and your ticket includes admission to The Confluence Cultural Centre and a small popcorn! Now, there’s an affordable way to end the week.

Grab our December issue of The Scene on stands this week for more events and things to do around the city.
