Monday
It’s the last week to catch The Lion King over at the Jubilee, which finishes its Calgary run on August 17. There are still tickets available, with some shows during the week with tickets for less than $100. Grab them before they’re gone over at jubileeauditorium.com.
Tuesday
On Tuesday, The Market on Stephen Ave returns until August 26, running on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shop all local vendors selling all kinds of artisan goods, including clothing, handcrafted jewelry, and sometimes even Tupperware. No matter what you’re looking for, the market breathes new life into a shopping area, just when you think you’ve seen all it has to offer.
Wednesday
Head over to Dickens on Wednesday for Trivia Killed the Radio Star, the once-per-month music trivia night hosted by Talespin Trivia (and co-hosted by our editor-in-chief, Nathan Iles). Enter your team with six of your most musically-minded friends for $5 a person, paid at the door. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the quiz starts at 7, so you’ve got plenty of time to slam back a pint of Dickens Draft or munch on a basket of fries. Be sure to check out Talespin’s Instagram, @yyctrivia, and check all their events this month in our print issue.
Thursday
The Globe Cinema and Calgary Cinematheque’s “Summer of Heat” movie series is in full swing, with their second installment playing this Thursday. This time it’s the 1975 classic Dog Day Afternoon. While the weather outside may be scorching – or pouring rain, who’s to say – the Globe is well-air conditioned, so you’ll be basking in schadenfreude watching Al Pacino sweat through his shirt, wrangling hostages inside a Brooklyn bank on a hot summer’s day. General admission tickets are $14.70, but you can become a Calgary Cinematheque member for free by signing up for their newsletter and knocking the price down to $12.59. Tickets and membership sign-ups are both available at calgarycinema.org.
Friday
Have you ever watched a movie and said to yourself, “I just wish it had more bikes in it!” Well, even if the answer is ‘no,’ the Globe Cinema and Ridley’s Cycle have a solution this Friday. The 25th annual Bicycle Film Festival runs from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, and celebrates the 80th anniversary of Ridley’s Cycle. Watch a curated lineup of short films that feature or centre around bicycles. Be sure to buy a ticket for the raffle, all of the proceeds of which go directly to Youth En Route, a charity that helps give kids access to bikes. Tickets are $21.53 after fees, available on Eventbrite.
Saturday
Village Ice Cream is teaming up with Easy Days YYC on Saturday for a pop-up market in the parking lot of their Victoria Park location. The lot is going to be packed with 20 vendors selling their wares from handmade ceramics to vintage clothes, plus live DJs spinning some tunes – and it’s dog-friendly! The market runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and make sure to get your pooch out the door early, because the first 50 dogs get a free scoop of doggy-safe ice cream. The market is free to attend, just bring enough cash to do some shopping and eat plenty of ice cream.
Sunday
And on Sunday, have fun and do good with The Alice Sanctuary’s 10th Annual Live Music Fundraiser over at Vegan Street and The Attic. Pay $25 towards supporting the Alice Sanctuary’s goals of taking care of rescue farm animals, and enjoy a wicked evening of live music from local acts like Natalie Inga, an eco-friendly market from Changemakers Collective, and an all-day happy hour at The Attic. Enter the raffle for the chance to win some prizes, including an experience pass to all events at The Attic, and a $100 gift card to Vegan Street. Grab tickets before they’re all gone over on Eventbrite.
