Monday
To start off the week strong, check out the Regal Cat Cafe’s kitty paint night. Led by local visual artist Rozzie Lee, your ticket includes a brewed tea or coffee, all of the supplies you need to make your own painting, and, of course, a kitty visit.
Tuesday
Head down to the Eau Claire Tower on Tuesday for Avenue’s Future of the City event, which brings together artists, entrepreneurs and community-builders to talk about Calgary’s next chapter — what’s worth keeping around and who’s building what’s next. Speakers include representatives from the Centre for Newcomers, Inside Out Theatre, the Wilder Institute, Hunter Hub and more.
Wednesday
Hump day brings with it Ratboy Comedy’s weekly stand-up comedy open mic. For just 5 bucks, head down to Vern’s at 8 p.m. to catch over a dozen 5-minute sets by beginners, travelling pros and everything in between. If you’re feeling inspired, you can hop on the mic yourself by sending a DM to @ratboycomedy on Instagram to reserve a spot on their lineup.
Thursday
Make your way to Lougheed House on Thursday to attend a conversation with Andrew Pretty Young Man from the Siksika First Nation. The talk will cover Blackfoot practices of preparing for the fall and winter seasons, anchored by Pretty Young Man’s experiences and family traditions. Doors are at 6 p.m. with a talk at 7 p.m., and tickets are free or by optional donation.
Friday
Spark After Dark presents Paranormal Activities, dubbed a night where “science fiction meets science fact.” Experiences include a talk on the science behind paranormal experiences, a ghost story-writing workshop, a wandering illusionist and a sci-fi drag show with performances by Karla Marx, Viscera, Dogiichow and more. Tickets start at $29 for seniors and students, and you can get ‘em while they’re hot at sparkscience.ca.
Saturday
Taking place at the #1 Royal Canadian Legion this Saturday, That Party Last Night Vol. X did not skimp on their lineup. The night of live hip-hop, R&B, soul and more will be headlined by Juno-nominated rapper ARDN, and will feature performances by The Blue, Ginger Beef, Hip Hip Thursday and much more.
Sunday
For arts at altitude, head to Banff and take the gondola up Sulphur Mountain for Autumn Above, a seasonal celebration that includes fall drinks, vibrant landscapes and live music from noon to 4 p.m. by singer/songwriter Liam Cowan. Access to Autumn Above is included with your Banff Gondola ticket.
