MONDAY
Calgary’s Pride celebrations kick off on Monday and run all the way until the end of the week on September 6. Kicking off the week of celebrations, head over to The Confluence for a flag raising ceremony starting at 11 a.m., and follow it up that evening with the TD Pride Block Party held over at the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Association, running from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.. There’s drag performances, live music, a DJ, food trucks, a beer garden, face painting and even bouncy castles for the kids. Best of all, it’s free to attend!
TUESDAY
Try your hand at punch needling on Tuesday at Alcove Beltline. This Filipinx edition of Alcove’s punch needling workshop will include Filipino-inspired stencils, and Filipino finger foods and desserts. There’s no prior experience required, and all materials are provided. Get your ticket for $36.60 on Eventbrite.
WEDNESDAY
On Wednesday, check out the Colours of Healing group exhibition, presented by LOUD Art Society at two locations in Calgary, LOUD Art Society’s location in the Astra Business Centre and in the Residence Inn by Marriott Downtown/Beltline location. The work of 30 artists are presented at the exhibition, and it’s completely free to attend. The exhibition closes September 26, so check it out before its too late.
THURSDAY
Head over to High Park on Thursday for another edition of Movies with a View. The show this time is the 2009 cult classic horror-comedy Zombieland. Featuring the familiar faces of Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin, this film is an absolute riot and the outdoor setting is perfect for a rewatch or first-time viewing. All Movies with a View are free, with popcorn and pop for sale on site. Don’t forget to bring a chair or blanket!
FRIDAY
Calgary’s poet laureate from 2022 to 2024, Wakefield Brewster, will be at Nvrlnd. Arts foundation on Friday for An Evening with Wakefield Brewster. Described as “the people’s poet,” Brewster is one of Canada’s most prolific poets. This evening event is entirely free to attend, with items for purchase available to help keep events like this free.
SATURDAY
This weekend, check out the 2nd edition of the Afro Caribbean Festival downtown at the Lot 6 event space. Over the course of the weekend, explore the diverse cultures of the African diaspora through events including a fashion show, a parade, a variety of cultural performances, live music and arts and crafts. There’s also a kids corner for the little ones, so it’s a great day out with the whole family.
SUNDAY
Video game enthusiasts are going to want to grab tickets to Sunday’s show at the Jubilee Auditorium – Undertale: The Determination Symphony. Featuring some of the most memorable tracks from the hit 2015 RPG played by a 25-piece orchestra, this concert brings the game’s characters, battles and emotional moments to life through music.
