On Monday, head over to Raw Canvas for a Blacklight Paint Night. When the lights go out, paint a picture in glowing neons. Unlike other experiences at Raw Canvas, this paint night involves minimal instruction, so bring whatever experience you have and your creativity to make something entirely your own. TUESDAY
The Stephen Ave market is back on Tuesday for its last August date, and it promises to be the biggest one yet. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., shop from over 40 local vendors selling delicious food, one-of-a-kind crafts and various other artisan goods. It’s free to attend, so just bring enough cash to do some shopping.
WEDNESDAY
Do some shopping and watch a beloved film on Wednesday at the Crescent Heights Vintage Night Market and Movie, held at the corner lot on Centre Street and 16th Ave. From 5 to 8 p.m., scope out various vintage, upcycled and thrifted goods, and then rest your feet to watch The Princess Bride. Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and be sure to grab yourself a bag of free popcorn.
THURSDAY
Thursday brings another edition of “Hot Dogs and Hot Takes on History” over at The Confluence. This talk is called “Google Maps Could Never: Trails to The Confluence with David Finch.” Over the evening, historian and naturalist David Finch will look at the five ancient trails that led to the area now called The Confluence, and how our geography made Calgary into the place we know now. And of course, you’ll get to eat hot dogs. Tickets are $15, available on The Confluence’s site.
FRIDAY
Did you know that Calgary has an annual film festival centered around bicycles? On Friday, check out the 26th annual Bicycle Film Festival over at the Globe Cinema. Expect an evening showcasing films all about bikes and the people that ride them. Tickets are $30, and proceeds from the event go towards Youth Enroute, which raises money to help kids access bikes.
SATURDAY
If you’re the person who always eats the pickle spear from your friend’s burger, then Picklefest is the place for you. From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Big Rock Brewery celebrates all things fermented, brined, marinated or preserved, from the classic pickle to kimchi, beer, sauerkraut and beyond. It’s an all-ages event with tons of local vendors, live music and more. Tickets are $27, available on Showpass.
SUNDAY
Kick off Pride Week on Sunday over at the Sunnyside Skatepark with Flow Skate & Friends: Calgary Pride edition. Flow Skate is a dance and rhythm style of skateboarding created by entrepreneur Zia Stolbie, focused on good vibes rather than sick tricks. The skate sesh is free and open to all ages, and Vacay Brew Co, Alleykat and Templ are all serving non-alcoholic brews for you to sip on. After skating, head over to Vacay’s rooftop patio for the Pride after party.
